The definition of appeasement, within politics, is to agree with an enemy to avoid conflict. British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain used the ideas of appeasement while dealing with Adolf Hitler's rise to power. Hitler invaded Austria in March 1938, and then set his eyes on a part Czechoslavakia, Sudetenland, where many ethnically German people resided. Czechoslovakia was not prepared to give it up easily, but needed the help of the power of the Western governments. Britain and France met with Germany in Munich in September 1938 to keep war at bay. This is where appeasement was used by allowing Germany to invade Czechoslovakia as long as he did not invade any other countries. However, he did not keep his word. Hitler, after signing a nonaggression pact with Stalin, staged an accident blamed on Poland, and on September 1 1939, he invaded Poland. In hindsight, I believe that appeasement was not a good idea. Britain and France should have stood their ground against Germany. The saying goes, "you give them an inch, they take a mile" and that is especially true with a man like Hitler.I think with a greedy and powerful government like Germany had, war was inevitable. I believe it would have been a better idea to go straight into conflict rather than allowing him to acquire more territory.
