The United States did not initially plan on joining World War II, and from this fact stemmed many disadvantages. First was their depleted navy and lack of supplies. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor had taken a toll on American naval forces, and as this was their major military power, the United States entered the war unprepared. The counties that had begun the war had been producing supplies and machinery for years prior, while America lacked ground forces, air forces, and everything in between. America did have fighter planes, but American pilots did not compare to the German pilots that had been training for years. Japan also held many wins in war’s beginning. To overcome this obstacle, strategy took precedence with the American forces. Overcoming the economic obstacles of the war took time, but eventually led to an increase in production. However, first the economy had to be stabilized for war. The War Production Board (WPB) was created to try and control military purchases, but was never completely successful. The WPB’s power was transferred to another organization that made little more progress. Although not one specific organization helped tame war economy, it remained stable throughout the war and also managed to begin producing a surplus of supplies for the American troops.
