“Big stick” diplomacy comes from Theodore Roosevelt’s usage of the phrase “speak softly and carry a big stick.” This means that a country should peacefully negotiate while also threatening their military power. It seems to be effective. In T.R.’s time it was extremely effective. He constructed additions to the Monroe Doctrine without questioning congress or anyone else and built the Panama Canal under “big stick” diplomacy. In the case of the Russo-Japanese War Roosevelt’s “soft speaking” during negotiation won him a Nobel Peace Prize. However, this policy is only sustainable as long as the United States is a major war power. Other countries having high military stature in terms of weapons and troops could make holding our “big stick” over them more difficult.

Great job as usual Miss Maddy! I would kind of agree with you that this "big stick" idea of just pushing into other countries isn't always a good idea. The "speak softly" portion of this idea I do actually like though.

Big Stick Diplomacy means that the country has a powerful military. I would argue that this policy is very effective. If a country has a military large enough to scare anyone, other countries are going to listen no matter what the large country says because it is a force to be respected. The United States has used this tactic for decades and it has worked fairly well, or at least until we get little thorns like terrorists trying to tear us apart. the military has become less effective due to the new technology of Nuclear power. This has become our big stick. I personally think that you cannot speak softly and carry a big stick to much anymore. My generation thinks that they are invincible and when they get hurt they cry to mommy or to the judge. The current generation is almost all talk and no big stick. So I see Big Stick diplomacy being brought to a halt until my generation figures out that talking is not always going to work; Sometimes you just have to show others who is strongest.

I agree with your argument that having a large military can help sway the opinion of other nations.

I think big stick diplomacy is good because it shows countries who's boss.
