Over all I give the McKinley administration a B+. He became president as the depression came to a close. I think it would take a lot of work to be president to a broken country. Newspapers critiqued McKinley as a little boy led around by "Nursie" Hanna, the representative of the trusts. However, McKinley was not dominated by Hanna; he condemned the trusts as "dangerous conspiracies against the public good". McKinley delivered his message of neutral intervention in April 1898. Congress thereupon voted three resolutions tantamount to a declaration of war for the liberation and independence of Cuba.

I really liked the information you provided, but what were his "cons" so to speak? I agree with the fact that he did well for being the president in such dark times; however, I'm just wondering why he didn't deserve an A+ in your opinion. Good answer, just adding that he did make mistakes or have misjudgments would have helped.:)

(Sorry I hit sent to early) In 1900, McKinley again campaigned against Bryan. While Bryan inveighed against imperialism, McKinley quietly stood for "the full dinner pail." Which is a republican term that defined when McKinley stood appeal particularly to the labor vote

Nice answer Ashton! You supported your answer very well with examples and I also like how you put your personal view on that it must have been hard to start of as a president of a broken county. I believe I would give McKinley a very similar grade.

I really enjoyed reading your answer, and I think you did a great job! You brought up a lot of good points, and some were points that I hadn't even realized. I think I learned more reading your answer!

McKinley and his administration receive a B in my opinion. The 25th president and his administration not only succeeded in winning the Spanish-American War, but also raised protective tariffs and were committed to the gold standard. McKinley developed the 1897 Dingley Tariff to ensure safety to factory workers against other competition and then in 1900, obtained the Gold Standard Act. They were all very determined to restore prosperity, so only weeks after McKinley's inauguration, approval was granted to raising duties "to the highest point in American history." The administration delicately handled the silver question, though. A commission was sent to Europe to strive for an agreement on free coinage of silver, but no such agreement occurred; therefore, the Republicans legislated the Currency Act of 1900 stating America's commitment to the gold standard. McKinley's wealth began in 1898 when businesses started to boom from crop failures and an increase in productive facilities and population. All of this produced rapid economic growth. "Had it not been for a dramatic increase in the gold supply in the late 1890s, Populist predictions of financial disaster might in fact have proved correct." I don't give him a grade higher than a B because he seemed to care more about wealth than other more important issues; although, gaining wealth did help with some critical issues.

Great answer Elayna! It has seemed that our country was the happiest during times of wealth, and isn't that what we still strive to achieve in our lives? I'm not saying that being the most concerned about wealth is the best idea, but it tends to make people happy.

I’d give the McKinley administration an A-. To me McKinley laid some of the foundation for our economy and government today. McKinley established the Gold Standard Act as the official backing of American money. McKinley also led America through a fairly successful war. This war gave America control of a lot of new land including the Philippines. McKinley also installed “The Open Door Act” allowing for trade with China. This made it so that America’s interests in China were safe without the worry of war. This was only the beginning of trade with China. Today we, as a country, are very dependent upon trade with China. I think that perhaps the most important thing the McKinley administration did was annex Hawaii. Hawaii came with many benefits both for the economy and military. Hawaii draws in money from tourism, and Hawaii also had the Dole fruit company another money maker for the United States. The government is able to make money off both tourism and the Dole fruit company by imposing taxes. The United States navy also benefited with such islands as Oahu where Pearl Harbor was located. However, the annexation of Hawaii is also why I dock McKinley’s grade a little. I feel as if he could have handled the situation with a little more grace; however, he did get the job done.

Rachel, very eloquent answer! I agree with the positives you listed in the McKinley administration. Today, we rely heavily on trade with China, and it is very strange to imagine the United States without Hawaii! I also agree that McKinley went about things in a way that lacked grace and often times compassion, but he did help make the United States the empire it is today. Good job!

Great answer Rachel! How do you think the McKinley administration could have handled itself better during the annex of Hawaii?

This is a really good answer Rachel with a lot of great points. I would have to agree with Sabrina in asking how do you think they could have handled themselves better during that time of the annexing?

The McKinley administration did many good things for the United States. McKinley introduced “The Open Door Act” which allowed trading with China. By doing so, the United States could trade with China without having to worry about war. This only began trading with China. Today the United States relies heavily on our trade with China. McKinley also led the United States through a war which resulted in America’s control over new land such as the Philippines. I would say that war was pretty successful on McKinley’s behave. He also established the Gold Standard Act. The Gold Standard Act became the new backing of American money. McKinley also annexed Hawaii. Hawaii brought in and still brings in a lot of money for the United States. Hawaii brings in money from tourism and the Dole fruit company. Hawaii not only helped the United States economically; it also helped the United States Navy. The island of Oahu, Hawaii, housed Pearl Harbor. I believe the annex of Hawaii was one of the most successful things the McKinley administration did. I do also believe that the McKinley administration could have handled the annex of Hawaii better than they did. Because of all the success the McKinley administration had, I would give the administration an A.

The McKinley administration did a lot of great things for our country. McKinley let America through a war and in a pretty good way if you ask me. We gained a lot of land from this and gave us a lot of controll. He introduced "The Open Door Act" which made us able to trade with China. Not having to worry about war because of this and knowing that things were safe was a great weight off of Americas shoulders. When McKinley annexed Hawaii that was a huge turning point for The States. Hawaii brings us money from a lot of things the main one being tourism and the next biggest one probably the Dole fruit company because of all the taxing. If America didn't have Hawaii as a part of it that would be very weird and we wouldn't be getting that money from it. Hawaii is a big part of the U. S. and I don't know what it would be like without it. McKinley did a great job as president and I feel that him and his administration deserve an A.

The McKinley administration did some great things but he also did some bad things. however, I think these things weigh out so I will give him a B. Some of the good things he had under his administration the open door policy. this policy allowed us to do business with china. However, he did do some bad things like I believe he forcefully annexed Hawaii. They went to war of fruit. I think that if your going to go to war than do it over something worth it. however, we have Hawaii as one of our 50 states and the dole fruit company which is one of the largest fruit companies in the world. He did several great and bad things. but, what president doesn't so where would we be without them.
