The Treaty of Versailles seemed to be a very controversial topic at the time. It was signed on November 11, 1918, and ended World War I. This document put all the blame for causing the war upon Germany, leaving the country to provide all compensation for the war. Some thought this view was too harsh; however, there were some who thought it wasn’t harsh enough. Once a new government was in office, Germany eventually signed. This led to the thought that the lack of support from society, especially the Jewish, led to the fall of the Germans in this war. It was even said that the Jewish “sold the Germans out to the Americans.” This led to the degrading opinion of the Jewish people by the Germans, causing the rise of the Nazi army years later. I think that the Treaty of Versailles was so influential to American history because at the same time, it ended one war but was starting another. The signing of this document ended the fighting in WWI; however, it raised tensions and seemed to be a major part of the beginning of WWII.

Great answer Timmi. Do you view the Treaty of Versailles as being too harsh or do you think that Germany got what it deserved?

At the time there was a vast array of differing opinions towards the Treaty of Versailles creating tension that would continue to influence history. The Treaty of Versailles was extremely detrimental to Germany. This treaty required Germany to take responsibility for the war and pay all the costs associated with the war. This took a toll on Germany who was still in disarray from the war, and caused even more damage to its already struggling economy. Many people opposed this treaty finding it to be too hard on Germany, but many also found it to be just and fitting. Once this treaty was signed, Germany began to in part lay blame on its Jewish occupants. The disarray of Germany and the lack of leadership from the government played a huge role in allowing Hitler to seize control and start WWII. I believe the Treaty of Versailles was so influential in history because it had such a huge impact on Germany. I think anything that influences a country as much as this treaty did will have a continued impact on history for many years. This treaty might have stopped the war, but it caused even greater tensions in Germany leading to another massive war.

Rachel, good job! What do you think would have happened without this treaty? Do you think a second world war would have been avoided had they been far less harsh on Germany? Good answer though!

Although Germany and the Allies signed the Treaty of Versailles the war was far from over. Germany was in a tough position because of the war. Germany hit a recession like the rest of the world after the war and to add pressure the British and French really wanted Germany to be punished for its actions. The reparations cost Germany $33billion. This wrecked the German economy and created bitterness in the country. Germans were looking for a scapegoat, and the blame eventually fell on the Jewish. This misconception led to the rise of Hitler and the infamous Nazi Germany. The treaty only stopped the war momentarily and played a major role in starting World War II.

The Treaty of Versailles was such an influential part of the 20th century for many ways. First of all, it ended a world war. Considering the casualties of the war, this was a huge deal! I also feel this document was influential because although it ended the first World War, I feel like it aided in the start of the second world war. The Treaty of Versailles put all of the blame for the war on Germany. Considering Germany was already in a less than ideal economic state, this additional war debt was devastating. Some people were thinking that this new weight on Germany's shoulders was far too harsh, but others were saying that the sole blame should've been on Germany. Germans of course were also looking for someone to blame for their misfortunes just like the other countries had done to them. The Germans looked to the wealthy Jewish residents as the people to blame, for they felt the Jewish had sold out the Germans to the Americans. This new, unnecessary hatred toward the Jews led to the powerful rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party, which eventually led to the second world war. The Treaty of Versailles had such a huge impact on Germany, and eventually the rest of the world which makes it a highly important event in history. I still feel like things would have been bad with and without the Treaty. It got the world out of one war, and sent it straight into another. However, there were obviously other factors to consider in WWII.

Many people had different opinions on the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty was putting all the blame on Germany and was making them pay for everything that happened during the war. There were two types of people, people who thought that this was unfair, and people who thought this was not enough punishment for them. People were thinking that the Germans fell for this reason and especially the Jewish were thinking this. This led to the Germans bad view of the Jewish people and eventually led Hitler to take control and start WWII. This was such a huge influential event in history because it first of all stopped a war. It also led to other war that Germany had because of all the issues they had because of this treaty.

The Treaty of Versailles is very influential part of history for many reasons. For one, this treaty officially marked the end of World War I and all the horrible things that came with it. Peace was once again restored in the world, for the most part. However, this treaty perhaps also started one of the most horrific events in history in my opinion. The treaty required that Germany, who lost the war, had to take complete blame for the war and pay millions of dollars in reparations. As well as being forced to disarm and give up part of the territory they held. This requirement left Germany in an economic crisis. There are speculations that this treaty possibly could have started the next world war. With their economy and country in shambles, Germans started looking for people to pass the blame onto for why they were in such a crisis. The blame landed on the shoulders of the Jewish community. Thus, the creation of the Nazi party and ultimately World War II occurred. Personally, I do not agree with how the treaty was handled. The whole idea of the Paris Peace Conference and the League of Nations was to promote peace. Yet they passed this treaty, imposing it on Germany without them even being able to be part of the negotiations. I do think that Germany needed to pay some reparations, however I believe they should've gotten some say in what occurred in the treaty.

There were many different opinions on the Treaty of Versailles. There were two main types of people with two main opinions on the Treaty of Versailles. There were people who thought that it was unfair and people who thought that was not enough punish. Jewish people were especially a part of the group of people believe the punishment was not enough. Many people believe this opinion of the Jewish people lead to the Germans bad view of the Jewish people which would also eventually lead to Hitler taking control of Germany and the start of WWII. The Treaty of Versailles not only ended a war; it also led to the start of another war because of the difficulties Germany had because of the treaty. This caused the Treaty of Versailles to be such a huge influential event in history during the 20th century. The Treaty of Versailles and WWII made a huge impact of the World’s History.

I believe the Treaty of Versailles was only the end to something small, but the beginning of something very major and important to our history. It may have ended the fight and war of WWI but it stop people from talking about the Germans being against all the Jewish people. This treaty put all the weight on Germany's shoulder for this war. Everyone was now to blame them for everything. Germans would eventually become very angered and take it out of the Jews. Leading to WWII. And the Nazi armies and the concentration camps. Therefore, I do believe the Treaty of Versailles was a very important, influential event in our history.

The Treaty of Versailles is considered an influential event for many reasons. It was the official end to WW1, yet it was the start of WW2. By blaming Germany for the cause of the war and taking their colonies and paying the equivalent of 422 billion dollars, we brought WW2 upon ourselves. We blamed the Germans for them war and they blamed the Jews. so this treaty not only ended one war but started another. It was a very influential event in the 20th century, just not in a positive way.

The treaty of Versailles was and still is a very significant event in our history. The treaty was forced on Germany by the Allied powers in 1920 after the end of World War I which demanded unconscionable reparations from the Germans. The main desire of this treaty was to chastise Germany, criticizing them for the cause of the war. They made them pay off every war debt obtained by the allies during the war except the United States, causing them to go bankrupt in a matter of years. The purpose was also to keep Germany from ever going into a war again. However, the treaty had a reverse affect. It enabled the socialist party, leading the country into yet another war. Maybe if the treaty would have been less disciplinary there may have not been another world war.
