The Spanish-American War was caused by several events building up in Cuba. Cuba had been one of Spain's oldest colonies. It was a very important colony to Spain due to the wealth that it brought through its sugarcane plantations. In 1868, Cuba made its first attempt to gain independence through a guerrilla war without American intervening and also without success. Plagued by economic crisis, Cuba rose up again in 1895. Again, the new American president William McKinley did not want to intervene in the war between Cuba and Spain. When the war gained momentum in Havana (the capital of Cuba today), McKinley decided to send the battleship "Maine" to Havana, so that Americans there could evacuate if they were to be attacked. That battleship, though, soon exploded and the press blamed Spain for this explosion, setting up the Spanish-American battle. Congress declared Cuba independent and demanded Spain to withdraw. Spain in turn declared war on the United States.

I really like your answer. You explained it short and sweetly while giving enough information to explain your answer. Well done, you! ;) Do you think this war was inevitable or that it could've blown away in time? Or at least for longer than it did, especially considering how long the "short little war" lasted?

In 1821 Monroe proclaimed "America for the Americans". Implicity the "Americans" were the citizens of the United States who consider themselves "Americans" forgetting the rest of the continent. EE.UU. and the US Southern States wanted to annex Cuba years before the Civil War as an slave state. For the same reason the South supported Texas "independence", and had in its plans the annexation of Cuba, Central America and some other parts of the Caribbean. As a result of Manifest destiny, the US annexed Hawaii and coveted the Philippines, then a Spanish colony. Gaining the Philippines, Guam, etc,, would give the US a dominating position in the Pacific. Cuba and Puerto Rico, a foothold in the Caribbean. As it has been proven after revising what is left of the Maine, the explosion was caused by coal, and it location next to explosives, as the Spanish claimed (the US refused to investigate the cause). In summary, American Imperialism at its best.

The reasons for the Spanish-American War were the Cubans objecting Spanish rule since 1868. The United States chose not to interfere until the Cubans began an uprising in 1895. Cubans tried forcing Spaniards to depart the Spanish, led by General Weyler, by preparing concentration camps containing civilians who died from disease and malnutrition. America was frightened from the increase of Cuban immigrants, so they joined the Cuban Revolutionary Party in New York. Also, the war was caused because American newspapers covered the affairs of Cuba in a more vivid way, mainly the "yellow press" by William Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. These papers appealed to patriotism and moral outrage with exaggerated reports against the Spanish such as blaming them for an American battleship explosion in 1898. However, President Cleveland was adamant about not getting involved in their affairs. It wasn't until McKinley became president in 1897, that Spain trepidatiously recalled Weyler, modified the concentration policy, and granted the island a qualified autonomy. All seemed to be going well until a Cuban agent stole a private letter written by the Spanish minister and gave it to the American press. This letter aimed insults at McKinley causing de Lome to resign. At around the same time as the letter, the Maine explosion occurred killing more than 260 people. Told earlier, the Spanish were blamed, so as hard as McKinley tried to avoid conflict, Spain agreed to stop the fighting and and get rid of its concentration camps only a month later. Spain would not allow negotiation with rebels and assumed the right to go on with hostilities and discretion; therefore, war was declared on April 25. The effects of this war included the Treaty of Paris, the desolation of the Spanish Empire, Cuba freed by the terms of the Platt Amendment, Puerto Rico and Guam yielding to America for protection, and the US rising with new international lower by gaining an imperial foothold in both East Asia and Latin America.

Great answer! Do you think it was the correct choice for us to go to war with Spain on behalf of Cuba? Or should we have stayed out of it to keep our men alive?

The Spanish-American war began because of the the Cuban revolt against Spanish occupation. The Monroe doctorine was the country's duty to defend the America's from foreign threats. The Yellow Press glorified war and Cuba longed for independence, but the real reason we went to war with Spain was because the USS Maine blew up in Havana and we blamed Spain. The Spanish-American war was considered a successful war if you can do that. Most of the deaths were caused by disease than the war itself. The effect of the war is we were then looked to as an empire and the U.S. And Cuba were considered friends. Defeating Spain opened up a lot of territories like the Phillipines as well as Puerto Rico.

The Spanish-American War arose due to problems arising in Cuba. Cuba had been trying for years to gain independence from Spain, and eventually revolted. The Spanish put civlians into concentration camps where thousands died. With many Cubans living in the U.S., there was a large amount of support to the struggling Cubans. As well as the "Yellow Press", which gave exaggerated yet convincing and persuasive views of the problems arising in Cuba. When the U.S. ship the Maine blew up in Havana, the Spanish were blamed by the press, allowing even more support to be born. President Mckinley, after many attempts to reduce the violence by talking to Spain, finally gave in and declared war. The war resulted in 460 Americans died of battle related causes, however 5200 died due to disease. The war gave independance to Cuba, and also allowed America to gain control of the Philippines and Puerto Rico. This war gave America even more oppurtunities to become a world power.
